Kulula.com On Top with AirKiosk System
January 15, 2006

"Kulula.com has in fact been the single biggest success story of e-commerce in South Africa, and is the first South African consumer website to reach 1.0 billion rand in online sales in a single year."

LATEST INNOVATION ALLOWS KULULA.COM
TO SELL OTHER AIRLINE BRANDS

Kulula.com visitors can now "go international" on selected BA/Comair flights and also book SA Airlink flights. BA/Comair's kulula.com subsidiary has expanded offered routes using a unique AirKiosk system feature to distinctly brand the availability of other airline flights on an AirKiosk-powered website.

Kulula.com, South Africa's first low-fare airline entrant in 2001, moved to the AirKiosk system within a year after finding a Microsoft SQL-based inventory and reservations system could not cope with the start-up's volumes and need for advanced booking features.

Using the AirKiosk system, kulula.com blazed a trail of airline marketing "firsts," quickly becoming the largest online retailer in South Africa and capturing 20% of the domestic airline market by 2004.

Kulula.com First Airline in Africa to offer:

  • Online Reservations Change (first airline in the world!)
  • Low Fare Finder calendar-based search
  • Auxiliary product (hotels, rental cars, taxi services) sales on the web
  • Web-based "On Hold and Pay Later" option
  • "Biz Deals" private web access to corporate clients with negotiated fares and reservations change rules
  • Galileo GDS Basic Booking Product for guaranteed sale through travel agencies
  • Galileo Direct Access and Interactive Sell
  • Travel Agent private web access for private fares and the option to incorporate a service fee within a kulula.com booking
  • XML API for sales through other websites
  • Kulula.com was also one of the first airlines to take advantage of the AirKiosk system's full Web Content Management features, which give an airline realtime control over everything on its website, from promotional pages to new routes and fares, for the ultimate in "speed to market."

The AirKiosk system feature behind Kulula.com's new "first" displays other airline flights for booking without costly connections to external systems.

Financial analysts have credited the demand for kulula.com services with the significant turnaround of parent Comair Ltd., which last June reported its first positive earnings after two years of losses.

Kulula.com transaction volumes have grown ten fold since the airline's move to the AirKiosk system, with website bookings during fares promotions exceeding 3,000 segments per hour plus sales of auxiliary products.
